A deejay, or DJ, is a reggae or dancehall musician who sings and toasts to an instrumental riddim or rhythm. Deejays are not disc jockeys from other music genres like Hip Hop, where they select and play music. Dancehall and reggae DJs who select riddims are selectors. Deejays who sing are also called singjays.
The term deejay came about as a result of the act of some selectors of the 1960s and 1970s such as U-Roy or King Stitt toasting to the version side of popular records of the time. The version came about when the record company produced the 45 record with the song, the flip side of which had the instrumental version of the song. This gave the deejays the chance to make up on-the-fly lyrics to the instrumental music. This occurrence gave rise to deejay toasting and the term has been used in that context ever since. Many famous selectors turned deejays include King Stur Gav, Josie Wales, Charlie Chaplin, and Tony Matterhorn.
A disc jockey is a person who selects and plays recorded music for a crowd or audience. Disk referred to phonograph records, while disc referred to Compact Discs. Today, the term includes all forms of music playback. There are several types of disc jockeys, including Radio DJs that introduce and play music that is broadcast on AM, FM, shortwave, digital, or internet radio stations. Club DJs select and play music in bars, nightclubs, discotheques, at raves, or even in a stadium. Hip hop disc jockeys select and play music using multiple turntables, often to back up one or more MCs, and they may also do turntable scratching to create percussive sounds.
A nightclub or a club, discothéque or disco, is an entertainment venue which operates late into the night. A nightclub is generally distinguished from bars, pubs or taverns by the inclusion of a dance floor and DJ booth, where a DJ plays recorded dance and pop music. The music in nightclubs is either live bands or a mix of songs played by a DJ through a PA system. Most clubs or club nights cater to certain music genres, such as techno, house music, trance, heavy metal, garage, hip hop, salsa, dancehall, drum and bass, dubstep or soca music. Many clubs also promote playing the Top 40 which has most of the night playing the most broadcast songs of the previous week.
